Mizutech Hydroponics Indoor Farm was established in August 2014 inside an industrial building. Utilizing hydroponics method in a controlled environment, we cultivate mainly the high value and rare “ICE PLANT” as well as other vegetables. Supported by and in cooperation with the Amazing Greens Hydroponics Garden Co., Ltd., we started from scratch, including the design of the environmental control system, the research and development of the nutrient solution formulae and most important of all, the sprouting of the seeds of ice plant imported from Japan. Therefore, we can proudly say that the “Ice Plant” we grow is “Made in Hong Kong”.
Mizutech Hydroponics Indoor Farm is probably the only one indoor farm cultivating “Ice Plant” by using hydroponics method in Hong Kong without any foreign technological assistance. The “Ice Plant” we cultivate can be branded as “Hong Kong Ice Plant”. Besides growing the rare and high value ice plants, we are also actively involved in the promotion of hydroponics in the city. In order to introduce this environmental friendly method to those who would like to learn about hydrophonics, we organize regular workshops, forums and courses.
The future goal of our company is to continue our efforts in the research and study of better ways to improve hydroponics cultivation for more new varieties, to contribute to the increase in food supply, environmental protection, and on medical applications.
Hydroponics is a method of cultivating plants using mineral nutrient solution in stead of soil. This is an efficient way to grow plants in both indoor and outdoor environments by setting the roots of the plants in a fibrous material which insulates from hot or cool weather. When being used indoor, the environmental conditions can be controlled.
Photosynthesis takes place in leaves while roots absorb nutrient under the water. Plants grow steadily according to production schedule as perfect conditions provided.
The Ice Plant is known as Mesembryanthemum Cristallinum in Latin and Ficoïde Glacialein French. They are native to Africa, Southern Europe and Sinai.
The leaves of ice plants are covered with mineral vesicles. When under the sun, these vesicles glitter and reflect the light like ice. That is how they have got the name Crystalline Ice Plant.
They are succulent and leafy plants that are edible. The leaves are thick and fleshy with a frosted look as if they were covered with tiny mineral droplets. As they are crunchy and juicy with a marine flavor, they are widely used to pair with seafood by chefs.
Apart from the nutrients obtained by consuming other common vegetables, particular rare nutrients inositol (myoinositol) and pinitol are found. Researches have been carried out and found that this nutrients combined with others is good for health. It is this nutrient that makes ice plant so unique.
